All- or four-wheel drive is a must, as is enough ground clearance to drive over obstacles — hills, rocks, mud, creeks — without sustaining damage. The wheels on a LWB vehicle are further apart so when you hit a bump in the road on your journey, the duration of time between the front and rear wheels going over an uneven service will be longer. This will make the overall drive a smooth and comfortable ride.
What are the pros and cons of shorter wheelbase?
Shorter wheel base cars are more agile, turn more easily and fit into tighter parking spaces more easily… they are lighter… Long wheel base cars have more leg room, go over speed bumps more smoothly and generally have a softer ride. They weigh more than short wheelbase vehicles. Depends on the intended use.
It rides better on the road with less bucking. However the difference when backing a trailer is way more noticeable than I expected.
A lower steering ratio indicates that the steering wheel must be rotated less to turn the wheels, but rotating the steering wheel will be more difficult. If the vehicle has a short wheelbase, the driver will end up oversteering to turn the car.
Why are longer wheelbase cars difficult to turn? The steering wheel isn't more difficult to turn, but they have a bigger turning radius. Meaning you need more space to make it around the same corner [unless we start tricking with rear-wheel steering and such things].
Basic vehicle dynamics: the wider the track, the lower the amount of weight transfer. This means more grip. If you only widen at one end, then that end will gain traction and the other will not which changes the handling balance.
