Today’s Wonder of the Day was inspired by Hayden. Hayden Wonders, “What is the fastest train speed?” Thanks for WONDERing with us, Hayden!

Need to get somewhere in a hurry? If you’re going to a friend’s house, the answer might be to ride your bicycle. But what if you need to get somewhere over a hundred miles away?

If you need to travel a long distance quickly, you might think first of an airplane. Today, though, it may be a good idea to think about trains, too.

Trains? Really? Have you ever been stuck at a railroad crossing, waiting for a slow-moving train to pass by? If so, you may not think of trains as a quick way to get from one place to another. However, today’s passenger trains can be a comfortable way to travel long distances quickly. Some trains may get you from one place to another just as quickly as an airplane. Taking the train may also be cheaper, too.

Have you ever used a subway system in a big city? If so, you already know that trains can be a quick and easy way to get around. Today’s modern aboveground trains are also catching up. They can be the best way to get to other nearby big cities without driving or flying.

In the United States, Amtrak’s Acela Express can reach a top speed of 150 miles per hour. That makes it the fastest train in the United States. However, it makes many stops. It also moves along aging, curved tracks. For that reason, the train’s average speed on an actual trip is about 80 miles per hour.

In other parts of the world, though, high-speed rail passenger trains can move much faster. In fact, many call them “bullet trains” because of their high speeds. Bullet trains in China, Japan, South Korea, and Russia regularly approach 200 miles per hour.

Some of the fastest trains in the world — called Maglev trains — use a special technology known as magnetic levitation. These trains use magnetic fields to levitate them above special tracks that propel them along quickly. For example, Japan’s Series L0 MagLev train is currently the fastest train in the world. It travels at 375 miles per hour!

Compared to riding in a car on the interstate at 70 miles per hour, you can see how a trip by train could be much quicker! What do you think it would be like to travel on one of the world’s fastest trains? Where would they take you?

Try It Out

Keep the learning train rolling down the tracks by checking out one or more of the following activities with a friend or family member:

  • The first trains in the world weren't super fast. For a blast from the past, jump online and explore Incredible Vintage Photos Of Classic Trains And Railroads From The 1940s. Can you imagine what it would've been like to work on one of these antique trains? How much fun would it have been to travel from town to town on the earliest railroads? It probably beat riding a horse! Have fun reminiscing about the early days of travel by rail!
  • The next time your family is planning a trip, consider going by train. You might ask yourself, “Can we get there from here?" Find out! Jump online and check out the USA Rail Map. Did you realize you could get to so many places via train? When you consider the price of gasoline and wear and tear on your family vehicle, traveling by train might be a good economic alternative. To research the price of a ticket by rail, check out the Amtrak website. You can learn more about what routes are available and how much tickets are. For fun, plan out an imaginary vacation and estimate the cost to travel by rail compared to automobile. Which is cheaper? Which do you think would be more fun?
  • Do you have a need for speed? Sure, going fast can be a blast. If you love roller coasters, you know how thrilling and wild a super-fast ride can be. But is getting to your destination as quickly as possible always the goal? We think not! Sometimes the joy is in the journey itself, not the ultimate destination. Riding on a bullet train would be fun, but we think you might miss a lot of things along the way. Take some time today to take a slow walk around your backyard, neighborhood or town. What things do you notice when you take your time and slowly stroll around the area? You might be surprised by the things you notice if you just take the time. There are things you might easily miss if you hurry. So slow down and enjoy the journey! Keep your eyes open. You never know what you might see that makes the whole trip worthwhile!
