ON CONTRARIAN PHILOSOPHY (2024)

Contrarian Philosophy is having its days these days. If we look deeply into it, it doesn’t seem to be a new idea.In real world-changing ways, there have been many philosophers who are contrarian. In fact, almost all thinkers and great minds in the world have been contrarian including Gandhi, Einstein, and Marx. When we are a contrarian we suppose to see beyond the track laid down in front of us. According to Peter Thiel, who is now in charge of making it a recent school of Philosophy, It’s about questioning and rethinking and shift mind in the process. But like all time ever, some entities believe just for the sake of it and with that, it loses its relevance as it loses its purposes. Contrarian beliefs need to lead us to a purposeful progression rather than trying to look different from others.

Among the things, contrarian does, that it burst the bubble of the conventional beliefs but at the same time it’s not an opposite game but thinking for ourselves. On education contrarian beliefs might help in a way that we have to figure it out whether college pays off or not maybe skipping a degree might lead us to an expected future in less time than spending years and a fortune in college, while knowing that some degrees have values like doctors, pilots and degrees which are high-end degrees. Another area where contrarian philosophy might apply is lifestyle or career. There isn’t a linear way of life. Everyone has to figure things out on their own. Applicability of one stream of thinking might not be applicable, suitable and even affordable to some people. If people start believing a confirmed way to make a sense of this world than hope will not have much validity. Popular beliefs are more often than not overrated. A different approach gives different results and that’s how people break cycles and create opportunities for themselves.

Contrary to the buzz about its trendiness, it isn’t a recent philosophy. In my opinion, it’s a philosophy of philosophies. The world we are living today is the result of contrarian beliefs otherwise we would still have been in a hunting-gathering phase of human existence. However, contrarian beliefs need to be understood in a contrarian manner. Without doubt, Karl Marx was a contrarian philosopher still following Marxist ideas blindly doesn’t make us contrarian(numerous other examples can follow the suit).
