Alongside the pedals, your main point of interaction with your car is the steering wheel. And if you long many hours behind it, while commuting, running errands, or road tripping, an aftermarket steering wheel cover can improve comfort and grip while protecting it from wear. Some of the fancier models can do so much as warm or cool your hands. Yes, even many of the most high-end cars can benefit from this (sometimes overlooked) accessory. A steering wheel cover can make a big difference in your daily, tactile relationship with your ride.

The Expert: As an automotive journalist for more than three decades, I’ve wrapped my hands around hundreds of steering wheels in new cars and have owned several beaters that required a cover, as with my current 1999 Saturn SW2 wagon. I’ve written about cars and technology for Wired, Rolling Stone, Road & Track, Automobile, PCMag.com, Playboy, and numerous other publications; and I cofounded the C3 Group in 2013 to produce automotive industry events in New York, San Francisco, Washington, D.C., and at SXSW in Austin. C3 Group was acquired by Informa in 2018. Now, I split my time between Hood River, Oregon, and Todos Santos, Mexico. When I’m not writing, I’m riding a surfboard.
What to Consider When Buying a Steering Wheel Cover
Steering wheel covers come in a range of materials and colors so broad that you’re bound to find something to fit your car, climate, and vibe. When shopping for one, always start by checking if a cover that catches your eye will fit your specific make and model.
Once you know it’s compatible, give it a feel to make sure you enjoy holding it: Adding a cover to your steering wheel will change how it feels to drive. Generally speaking, the thicker and heavier the cover, the more you'll notice the change. Some luxury covers have extra features, like heating and cooling, too. Finally, before you make your pick, make sure the cover looks good and matches your car's interior. With steering wheel covers ranging from $6 to $25, you’re bound to find something to fit your budget.
How We Evaluated The Best Steering Wheel Covers
I tested some of these steering wheel covers in my Honda CR-V during what passes for winter in Southern California, which means chilly mornings and mildly warm days. I also used several in Baja California Sur, Mexico, and I tried them in three very different vehicles: A 2022 Rivian R1T electric pickup, a Lucid Air EV sedan, and my 1999 Saturn Wagon. While I read online reviews to get a sense of consumers’ experience with and their comments on each cover, I ultimately considered how easy they were to install, how they felt in my hands, if they added weight or bulk, and whether their luxury features, like heating and cooling, worked as advertised.
Pros
Luxury look and feel
Provides great grip
Good fit on a 14.5-inch wheel
Cons
Heavier than other covers I tested
Could absorb dirt and sweat
After slipping the Valleycomfy cover onto to the tiller of my wheel, my first thought was “luxury car.” The genuine leather has a high-end look and feel and is a pleasure for the palms. It fit the CR-V’s 14.5-inch steering wheel like the proverbial glove but was a bit of a stretch to get it on the Saturn’s 15-inch helm. This Valleycomfy is a little thicker than other covers I tested but didn’t affect steering feel. It provided better grip than the other covers and held onto the steering wheel the best, although the leather could absorb dirt and sweat over time.

Pros
Good feel and grip
Understated appearance
Cons
Hard to install
Maybe because this SEG Direct steering wheel cover came from Amazon tightly shrink-wrapped, I had to wrestle with it more than the others to get it to fit on the CR-V’s 14.5-inch wheel. Even with it stretched out a bit, it was a struggle. Slipping this cover onto the 15-inch wheel of the Saturn reminded me of the adage “like socks on a rooster.” But I liked the muted black-and-gray look, and its feel was second only to the leather Valleycomfy, although for the same price you can have genuine leather instead of faux leather. It also weighs a bit less, but that didn’t make an appreciable difference.

Zonetech 12V Plush Heated Steering Wheel Cover
Best for Winter
Zonetech 12V Plush Heated Steering Wheel Cover
Pros
Quick heating
Comfy feel
Warms quickly
Cons
Hard to install
12-volt cord can get in the way
After installing snow chains in the wintery Oregon’s Mt. Hood area, my hands were cold and numb. With considerable effort, I eventually got the too-small Zone Tech 12V Plush Heated Steering Wheel Cover over the CR-V’s wheel, plugged it into a 12-volt outlet, and soon my hands were thawed and happy. The cover has a cushy feel, even without the heat. It warms quickly and has a built-in temperature control so you can warm your hands comfortably.
There’s a small issue you should know about, though. The 12-volt cord can get tangled around the steering column when you turn the wheel more than halfway. The cover has a quick-disconnect feature that should prevent this from ever becoming a driving hazard, but it’s still an awkward design quirk.

Sulida Sport Drive Steering Wheel Cover
Pros
Lightweight
Provides good grip with embossed bumps
Washable
Cons
Potentially not as durable
Could stretch out over time if fit on large wheels
This low-priced steering wheel cover is made of silicone, so it’s extremely thin and shouldn’t get as hot or cold as leather and microfiber covers. Embossed bumps improve the wheel’s grip, and the silicone, being washable, makes the cover easy to clean. Designed for 13- to 15-inch wheels, it’s small, so you may start to see it stretch more quickly than our other picks.

Best Bling Cover
Yogurtck Diamond Soft Leather Anti-Slip Steering Wheel Cover
Pros
Good feel
Adds some style to your ride
Stable grip
Cons
Hard to install
Crystals can be distracting
The soft leather cover feels good in your hands and provides stable grip, but the main attraction is the tastefully adorned row of crystal embedded around the wheel. They add a little extra traction, but may also create a distraction if they catch the sun the wrong way. Yogurtck advertises the cover as a “universal fit” for 14.5- to 15-inch-diameter steering wheels. But I couldn’t get it around the Lucid’s oddly shaped steering wheel, and had to wrestle with the cover to get it around the Rivian’s tiller.

Best for Summer
Rueesh 15-Inch Microfiber Leather Steering Wheel Cover
Pros
Easy to install
Perforated for permeability
Cons
Heavier than similar covers
This cover was very easy to install and features both a good grip and elegant look. It has small perforations that Rueesh says provide “strong air permeability and absorbs sweat,” which worked wonders while I was driving in the Baja heat. It’s slightly less expensive than our top pick, but it’s just as substantial. It’s made of the same microfiber faux leather as the SEG Direct cover. In warm climates, the look, feel, and ease of installation are hard to beat.

AJLTPA Neoprene Car Steering Wheel Cover
Pros
Easy to install
Stays cool
Good grip
Cons
Questionable durability
Made of neoprene, the material used for wetsuits, this cover will trap heat to prevent your wheel from getting too cold to touch, but also creates a buffer to keep your hands from heating up when the weather warms up. Unlike a wetsuit, however, it’s very easy to slip on and off. On the other hand, its elasticity makes me concerned that it may not hold up as well as other covers made from sturdier stuff.

Heavy
This steering wheel cover is made of synthetic rubber and viscose, a silk-like material with a smooth feel. Its 15-inch, universal-fit design makes it ideal for large steering wheels, although it’s heavy and could feel loose on smaller models. It also pairs well with just about every interior, since it comes in 15 colors.

Heavy
This is one of the most expensive steering wheel covers I tested, but it’s worth the expense. Made from a combination of microfiber leather and carbon fiber, the Kafeek Classic Carbon cover creates an excellent grip and looks sharp. It didn’t get noticeably cold in cool temps or hot as the day heated up. It’s also easy to install on mid-size, 14.5- to 15-inch wheels. The only tradeoff I found was its heft, though I can’t say I noticed it impacted my performance.

Cons
Material may sag over time
This is more like a steering wheel sock than a cover since it’s made of lightweight elastic microfiber polyester. That loose fit makes it especially easy to slip on. It’s 15 inches in diameter and can fit vehicles from compacts to pickups. The breathable material keeps your hands warm when it’s cold and cool when it’s warm. That said, I'm concerned are that it will absorb sweat over time (although it is washable). It’s also very supple, and could sag and slip off the wheel over time.

The suede and faux fur of this steering wheel cover make it soft, thin, light, and highly breathable. It doesn’t trap sweat, and the tiny protrusions on the cover’s surface make it easy to grip. Steering Wheel Cover Tips and Tricks From Our Expert
PM: Why are steering wheel covers so darn challenging to put on?
DN: You need a tight fit! A cover should fit snug, so that there’s no gap between it and the wheel. If the cover is too loose, the cover may slide on the wheel, potentially creating a safety hazard. Take your time when installing your new cover: Slip one side on, then slowly work your way around. Be careful not to let the first side come loose. With a really tricky pairing, you might even want to ask a friend for help.
PM: Will a cover change my car’s steering feel?
DN: It will at first, but, after several miles and days, you’ll get used to it. The time and process for feeling out for a new steering wheel cover varies from person to person, but a thicker, heavier cover will influence how your car steers far more than a lightweight cover.
PM: What steering wheel cover do you use?
DN: I stand by my top pick, of course. I use the Valleycomfy 15-inch Leather Steering Wheel Cover on my Honda CR-V.
