How do you know if you fail a TB test? ›

You may have swelling or a bump where the testing fluid was injected. The health care worker will measure the bump or swelling and will tell you if your skin test reaction is positive or negative. If you are not able to return within 2 to 3 days, you will need to repeat the skin test again.

If a person does not return within 48-72 hours for a tuberculin skin test reading, a second test can be placed as soon as possible. There is no contraindication to repeating the TST unless a previous TST was associated with a severe reaction.

A “positive” TB blood test result means you probably have TB germs in your body. Most people with a positive TB blood test have latent TB infection. To be sure, your doctor will examine you and do a chest x-ray.

Redness alone at the skin test site usually means you haven't been infected with TB bacteria. A firm red bump may mean you have been infected with TB bacteria at some time. The size of the firm bump (not the red area) is measured 2 to 3 days after the test to find out the result.

False negative result

You can also get a false-negative result. This means the test results are negative, but you have a TB infection. This could be because: A healthcare professional improperly administered your test.

Between 20 to 30% of people exposed to a person with active TB become infected. For that reason, doctors usually distinguish between infection (or a positive TB test) and an active infection. After you are infected, your immune system will attack the bacteria.

If the test is negative, a second test is administered one to three weeks later. If the second test is negative, the person is considered uninfected. If the second test is positive, then the person is considered to have a "boosted" reaction to an infection that occurred a long time ago.

The skin test reaction should be read between 48 and 72 hours after administration by a health care worker trained to read TB skin results. If a patient has symptoms of TB disease, health care providers should not wait for TB skin test results before starting other diagnostic tests.

The infected person's immune system walls off the TB organisms. And the TB stays inactive throughout life in most people who are infected. This person would have a positive skin or blood test for TB but a normal chest X-ray or one that only shows past scarring from the disease.

Both inactive TB and active TB disease can be treated. Even though you may not feel sick, inactive TB can develop into active TB disease at any time and make you sick. If you have inactive TB, treating it is the best way to protect you from getting sick with active TB disease.

Side effects are uncommon from the Mantoux skin test. However, a person who has been exposed to TB germs may occasionally have a sizable reaction, which may cause some mild itching, swelling or irritation. These kinds of reactions should disappear in one to two weeks.

Testing positive: This indicates that the body has been infected with the TB bacteria. An infection makes an individual extra sensitive to the tuberculin injection, which causes the test site to grow in diameter. Testing negative: This means the body is unlikely to be infected with the bacteria.

The test is "negative" if there is no bump (or only a very small bump) at the spot where the fluid was injected. A negative TB skin test usually means that you don't have TB. In some situations, you may need to have another TB skin test later.

Your health care provider MUST check your arm 2 or 3 days after the TB skin test, even if your arm looks OK to you. If you have a reaction to the test, it will look like a raised bump. Your health care provider will measure the size of the reaction. If there is a bump, it will go away in a few weeks.

It does not mean you have an active TB infection. The test may be seen as positive if the skin where you were injected is hard, raised, red, and swollen. But redness alone is not considered a positive test result. In many cases, a healthy immune system will surround the TB bacteria soon after you are infected.
