Modern vehicles come with a variety of anti-theft systems, from ignition locks to alarm systems and immobilizers. Unfortunately, these systems can be defeated by determined thieves, and thefts have been on the rise in many areas.

According to the National Insurance Crime Bureau, more than a million cars were stolen in the U.S. in 2022, a 7% increase from 2021 and up 25% from 2019. That makes an aftermarket steering wheel lock a solid investment, both as a deterrent and for added protection from theft.

A wide variety of steering wheel locks are available, ranging from simple and inexpensive models to high-end, heavy-duty systems. Some work by attaching a long arm to the steering wheel, which makes it difficult or impossible to turn the wheel. Others loop around the steering wheel and brake pedal, making it impossible to use either. Most are not meant to be standalone theft-prevention devices, but can be an effective way to discourage a thief from even trying.

We’ve taken a look a dozens of models currently available, to help you find the right one for you. Read on for our top five choices for a variety of needs and budgets.

Pros & Cons

How Does A Steering Wheel Lock Work?

While steering wheel locks come in a variety of shapes and sizes, they’re all designed to prevent the steering wheel from being turned more than just a few degrees. This acts as a theft deterrent because it prevents the thief from being able to steer the vehicle, which means that maneuvering out of a parking spot or negotiating a left or right turn at an intersection is impossible unless the thief first takes the time to either cut through the steering wheel lock, or the steering wheel itself.

This takes time and makes a lot of noise, which will make the thief think twice about taking your vehicle. In some cases, the steering wheel is locked into place by attaching it to the brake pedal. This makes it impossible for the thief to turn the wheel, or to apply the brakes.

Methodology

Steering wheel locks have only one primary purpose: preventing your car from being stolen. That said, they come in a variety of sizes, shapes, weights and different construction materials, some of which make them much tougher defenses for your car. In our research, we’ve used our own experiences as well as owner evaluations, and we’ve factored in complaints related to shoddy construction, risk of interior trim damage and practicality.

Since steering wheel locks aren’t particularly expensive, the primary factors in their ranking are their durability, strength and usability. A lock that isn’t durable isn’t worth having, and one that’s annoying to put on and take off might discourage use, defeating the purpose.

Through testing and research, we evaluate all steering wheel locks based on these weighted metrics:

  • Material strength and durability (40%)
  • Ease of use (30%)
  • Price (10%)
  • Manufacturer Reputation (10%)
  • Overall value (5%)
  • Warranty (5%)

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Can my car still be stolen with a steering wheel lock?

Yes. Unfortunately, a practiced thief will often find a way to work around nearly every lock or alarm so there are no universally fail-safe solutions. Some steering wheel locks are full-on theft deterrent systems and provide the most protection; others lean more toward discouragement, with the idea that a thief will be frustrated enough to give up and move along. A very determined thief, or one equipped with special tools, probably won’t be deterred, but a steering wheel lock will at least slow them down.

Will a steering wheel lock damage my wheel?

Some steering wheel locks may rub and scuff your wheel in spots. The key to avoiding this is having accurate measurements handy to get the best-fitting wheel lock possible. Many wheel locks come with padding for contact areas, which can minimize the risk of damage.

What if I lose my wheel lock keys?

Many steering wheel locks come with one or more spare keys. It’s always a good idea to stash an extra set in a safe place. If you’ve lost all the keys that came with your lock, the best bet is to call a professional locksmith to remove the device safely and without harm to your vehicle. We recommend holding off on any drilling, sawing, and/or hammering to remove a wheel lock without the original keys.

What type of steering wheel lock is the best?

The best lock for you depends on your needs, budget, and preferences. If you’re looking for something more robust, one of the bar-and-hook style like The Club 3000 may be your best bet. If your preference is more for a compact deterrent, one of the inexpensive devices above may be all you need.

Are there any other benefits of a steering wheel lock?

Depending on which car insurance company you use, purchasing and using a steering wheel lock may entitle you to a discount on car insurance. Some devices like the Tevlaphee double as a safety device, with a pointed end to break glass and escape from a flooded car or one with jammed doors after a crash.
