I'm going to start a new playthrough soon to get ready for the DLC.

I've beaten all of Elden Ring once when it came out. I kind of borderline cheesed the game, I used the class that starts with a katana, then looked up strong weapons and saw a ton of people recommending the katana that has a ranged magic attack. Those were basically the only weapons I used the entire game.

Then a few months later I played through most of the game again (didn't quite finish it) with a Faith build. I remember I was dual-wielding scythes, and I THINK I was using some of the dragon moves. It's been so long I honestly don't really remember details.

Despite loving Soulsborne games and having beaten most of them multiple times, I usually stick to pretty vanilla builds. I'd like to try to do something more interesting this time. Maybe a caster, maybe focusing on bow if that's viable, something like that.

Curious what everyone's favorite non-Strength/ Dex builds are.

My current playthrough is a bow build and it has been tough but a really fun experience. Some boss fights take forever though and maintaining stocks of all the different arrow types is a real pain.

My last playthrough was using the hookclaws and it was probably the most fun I've had with the game so far.

Start as the Wretch and self impose stat 'caps' at intervals of 5 -- no stats above 15 until all of your stats are at 15, no stats above 20 until all your stats are at 20, etc.

Let's you do pretty much everything (outside of the super high INT stuff), forces interesting choices with items and accessories, and keeps the game difficult without being some sort of Level 1 masochism that's also basically just cheese.

I'd suggest going through the entire list of weapons and picking a weird one that seems interesting, rushing to it as soon as possible and building specifically for it. I think that's generally a better way to do "runs" in Elden Ring than going all in on basic faith, int, str, or dex builds. Same concept with magic if you wanted to do that. Pick a specific class of magic, like "thorn sorcery" or "black flame incantations", get the staff or whatever that boosts that, and rush to the spells for that grouping only, etc.

Thanks, that makes sense. I vaguely remember being interested in a bleed build, I might check that out.

I appreciate the other suggestions too but they seem a little hardcore, I don't expect the game to be a cakewalk but I kind of just want to breeze through as much as I can so I have a character ready for the DLC.

I had a lot of fun doing arcane/dragon incantations. Especially the claw and the bite.

I'd advice to do a NG+ playthrough and try the weapons and spells you have. Once you find some you enjoy, build around them.

I did a dagger buckler build focusing on parrying. Made me finally learn parry timing and makes you feel like a total boss.

I loved my frenzied flame playthrough. Vyke's War Spear (fun ash of war that's not cheesy) with faith incantations focused primarily on frenzied flame for role playing purposes but Faith in general has tons of variety so you have lots of options.

I played through a chunk of the game dual wielding Antspur Rapiers (I think I might have put Bleed on them as well? Don't remember). Fun weapon, inflicting Scarlot Rot and watching things slowly die did not get old for me.

Pure Sorcerer plays quite differently from most builds but it's also ... Pretty easy? Like, NG Mohg is dead before he moves. And Moonveil is the logical choice for a backup weapon, so you'd be going back to the well with that.

My favorite oddball build is Vaati's bouncing discus/reflect build (first one in this):

It's pretty easy to get the timing on the reflect down.

I've also looked at sleep builds because they seem funny, but never really started one.
